Bendt Winge dining table
This rare drop-leaf dining table, model number 4, was designed by Bendt Winge and produced by Kleppes Møbelfabrikk in Norway in 1955. It is executed in rosewood, displaying a rich and expressive grain pattern with deep brown, reddish, and almost black tonal variations that are characteristic of high-quality Scandinavian rosewood from the period. The tabletop consists of a central section with two hinged drop leaves, allowing the table to shift from a compact form to a fully extended dining surface.
The construction is defined by precise joinery and a refined structural logic. The base features slender, straight legs connected by stretchers, with distinctive oval-shaped cut-outs in the vertical supports that add both visual lightness and structural interest. When folded, the drop leaves are supported by integrated swing-out legs, allowing the table to maintain stability in its extended configuration. The overall geometry is balanced and restrained, emphasizing proportion and functionality rather than ornament.
Bendt Winge was a Norwegian designer known for his rigorous approach to form and construction, often working with solid woods and emphasizing clarity of structure. His furniture designs reflect the principles of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, combining craftsmanship, material honesty, and practical adaptability. Model number 4 is a clear example of his interest in flexible furniture suited to domestic interiors where space efficiency was important.
Kleppes Møbelfabrikk was an important Norwegian manufacturer during the mid-20th century, recognized for its collaboration with designers such as Winge and for producing technically refined furniture in premium woods. Their production methods balanced industrial consistency with traditional cabinetmaking techniques, resulting in pieces that were both durable and visually refined.
The table remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. These include small surface marks and subtle wear to the finish, which do not detract from the overall appearance and integrity of the piece. The rosewood has retained a warm, even patina, and the mechanical elements of the drop-leaf function operate as intended.
