Information

Very rare dining table, model JH-567, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1952 and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen, Denmark.

An exceptional example of Wegner’s approach to the dining table, the JH-567 combines an imposing scale with remarkably light and elegant construction. Executed in solid teak and oak, the table is distinguished by its expansive oval top, gently rounded edges and slender tapered legs. The restrained form allows the richness and natural variation of the timber to become an essential part of the design.

In its closed configuration, the tabletop forms a broad oval measuring 180 × 130 cm. The construction incorporates a sophisticated extension system with additional leaves, transforming the table into an extraordinarily long dining table of approximately 370 cm when fully extended. A discreet central support provides additional stability in its extended configuration. Despite these considerable dimensions, the finely proportioned legs and shallow apron preserve the table’s visual lightness.

The tabletop displays particularly expressive grain, with warm variations in tone and beautifully figured areas throughout. Subtle transitions between the structural elements, the softly profiled edge and carefully shaped junctions between legs and apron demonstrate the high level of cabinetmaking associated with Johannes Hansen’s workshop.

The underside retains the Johannes Hansen Copenhagen Denmark maker’s mark, documenting its production by the celebrated Copenhagen cabinetmaker with whom Wegner maintained one of the most important collaborations in twentieth-century Danish furniture design.

This particular table has notable provenance, having belonged to Signe Persson-Melin, the influential Swedish ceramicist and designer. The provenance adds a compelling historical dimension to an already very rare example of Wegner’s early work for Johannes Hansen.

Designed in 1952, the JH-567 belongs to the period in which Wegner and Johannes Hansen were producing some of their most ambitious pieces, combining traditional cabinetmaking with an increasingly refined and distinctly modern vocabulary.

The table remains in good vintage condition with signs of use and a naturally developed patina consistent with its age and history.

Measures 180 × 130 × 73.5 cm (70.9 × 51.2 × 28.9 in). Approximately 370 cm (145.7 in) in length when fully extended.

A very rare and highly accomplished Hans J. Wegner dining table, distinguished by its exceptional proportions, ingenious extension construction, Johannes Hansen craftsmanship and important provenance from Signe Persson-Melin.
