Information

This rare ceramic bowl, designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1953, exemplifies Scandinavian modern ceramics through its refined form and masterful glazing. The bowl features a delicate, rounded shape with a slightly asymmetrical rim and a small, precisely crafted foot that underscores Friberg’s meticulous craftsmanship.

The surface is adorned with Friberg’s signature hare’s fur glaze, a variegated green finish with subtle tonal transitions creating a fine texture reminiscent of animal fur. This glaze technique, inspired by East Asian ceramic traditions, demands precise control of firing conditions and application methods to achieve its characteristic mottled effect.

Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) was one of Sweden’s foremost ceramicists, renowned for his exceptional skill and aesthetic refinement. He began his career as a thrower at Höganäs before joining Gustavsberg in 1934, where he collaborated with Wilhelm Kåge. Friberg’s distinctive style, combining soft, organic shapes with sophisticated glazing, earned him international acclaim.

Gustavsberg, established in 1825, played a central role in the evolution of Scandinavian modern ceramics, producing small, expertly crafted batches of artistic stoneware by master ceramists like Friberg.

Measuring 7 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm in height (2.8 x 1.8 inches), this bowl is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations, preserving the integrity of Friberg’s original design and glaze.
