Berndt Friberg vase
This rare large ceramic vase was designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1960s. The piece is executed in stoneware with Friberg’s signature hare’s fur glaze in subtle tones of beige and light brown, shifting softly into greenish hues depending on the light. The glaze is characterized by its fine vertical striations and delicate, semi-matte surface that accentuates the hand-thrown form.
The shape is slender and architectural, with a cylindrical body tapering gently into a narrow neck and slightly flared rim. This form demonstrates Friberg’s masterful understanding of balance and proportion, as well as his precision in throwing even, symmetrical vessels by hand. The glaze application complements the minimal geometry, emphasizing the vase’s verticality and understated refinement.
The condition is good vintage with minimal signs of age and use, preserving the integrity of the surface and glaze. The base bears the Gustavsberg studio mark and Friberg’s impressed monogram, confirming authenticity.
Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) remains one of Sweden’s most respected ceramic artists, known for his devotion to form, texture, and glaze experimentation. His works for Gustavsberg are celebrated for their harmony, restraint, and perfection of craft—qualities that made him a central figure of Scandinavian modern ceramics.
