Berndt Friberg vase
Rare ceramic vase designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies Friberg’s meticulous craftsmanship and technical mastery, displaying his characteristic fusion of precision throwing and subtle glaze work. The vase features an elongated, slightly faceted ovoid form that narrows elegantly toward the neck, culminating in a small flared mouth with a delicately rounded lip.
The surface is finished in Friberg’s signature “hare’s fur” glaze, a semi-matte green with fine vertical striations that create depth and movement. Variations in tone—from soft celadon to muted olive—reflect the potter’s exceptional control of glaze layering and kiln atmosphere. The base is neatly inscribed with Friberg’s monogram and the Gustavsberg studio mark, confirming its origin from the artist’s hand-thrown stoneware series.
Berndt Friberg (1899–1981), one of the foremost studio ceramists of the Scandinavian mid-century period, worked for Gustavsberg from 1934. His work is distinguished by harmonious proportions, quiet refinement, and surfaces that evoke the natural world. Each piece was individually wheel-thrown and glazed by Friberg himself, resulting in unique tonal and textural variations.
The vase remains in good vintage condition with only minor wear consistent with age. Dimensions: diameter 8 cm (3.1 inches), height 27 cm (10.6 inches).
