Berndt Friberg vase

This vase is a rare ceramic piece designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1963. The form is tall and slender, with a narrow base that expands into a softly rounded body before tapering into a long, slightly flaring neck. The glaze is a rich brown with subtle tonal variations, giving the surface a sense of depth and texture. At the rim and shoulders, the glaze lightens into a warm gradient, highlighting the contours of the shape. The piece is marked at the base with Friberg’s distinctive signature and Gustavsberg stamp.

Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) was one of Sweden’s most acclaimed ceramicists, celebrated for his mastery of glazes and refined throwing techniques. Trained as a potter, he joined Gustavsberg in 1934 and soon became known for his ability to produce delicate, perfectly balanced forms in a wide range of sizes, from miniature vessels to monumental pieces. His work is characterized by precise proportions and subtle glaze treatments, often achieved through repeated firings and meticulous experimentation. Friberg’s ceramics are highly regarded both for their technical perfection and their quiet, meditative presence.

Gustavsberg, established in the early 19th century near Stockholm, is one of the most important Scandinavian porcelain and stoneware producers. During the 20th century, the company became a leading force in modern Swedish design, employing influential figures such as Wilhelm Kåge, Stig Lindberg, and Berndt Friberg. Gustavsberg’s studio ceramics are especially prized for their combination of craftsmanship and innovation, qualities that placed the company at the forefront of Scandinavian modernism.
