Bertil Brisborg table lamp

This rare table lamp, model 30595, was designed by Bertil Brisborg and produced in the 1950s by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden. The design reflects the postwar Scandinavian emphasis on refined material combinations, craftsmanship, and understated elegance. Brisborg’s design sensibility in this model demonstrates a careful balance between functionality and decorative form, characteristic of Nordiska Kompaniet’s design output during this period.

The lamp features a lacquered metal shade in a muted blue-green tone, providing a soft yet distinctive color accent. The matte finish of the shade subtly diffuses light, reducing glare while enhancing ambient illumination. The wide, gently tapering form of the shade contributes to both effective light spread and sculptural clarity.

The vertical stem is wrapped in brown leather, which has developed a visible patina through age and use. This aged surface adds warmth and tactility to the lamp’s otherwise minimal geometry. The combination of leather with the surrounding metal components enhances the visual and material complexity of the piece.

The base and structural fittings are executed in brass, offering a warm golden contrast to the cooler tones of the shade and the darker tones of the leather. Bertil Brisborg (1903–1993) was a Swedish architect and designer who contributed to the design legacy of Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s leading department stores and producers of high-quality furnishings. The lamp is in very good condition, with minor signs of age-related wear visible on the leather and brass components. These features enhance rather than detract from the historical authenticity of the piece, which remains fully operational and structurally sound.
