Bertil Fridhagen easy chairs
This pair of easy chairs, model “Kuba” was designed by Bertil Fridhagen and produced by Bröderna Andersson in Sweden during the 1960s. The chairs feature sculptural frames crafted from solid teak, showcasing a warm reddish-brown tone typical of Scandinavian teak furniture from the mid-century period. The design is distinguished by gently curved, tapering armrests and a vertical slat open backrest, elements that contribute both to the chairs’ visual lightness and ergonomic comfort.
The cushions have been reupholstered in a dark navy or charcoal blue textile with a subtle texture, providing a pleasing contrast to the warmth of the teak. The seat and back cushions are loose and separate, designed to offer comfort while preserving the frame’s clean and formal aesthetic.
Bertil Fridhagen was a noted Swedish furniture designer recognized for his modernist approach emphasizing clear construction, functional design, and well-balanced proportions. Bröderna Andersson, the manufacturer, was among Sweden’s leading furniture producers in the mid-20th century, known for their craftsmanship and collaboration with prominent designers.
These chairs exemplify Scandinavian mid-century modernism through their restrained aesthetics, use of natural materials, and focus on user-centered design. They are in good vintage condition, showing light signs of wear consistent with their age. The teak surfaces have developed a minor patina but retain a well-preserved finish.
Each chair measures 68.5 cm in width, 77 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height, approximately 27 inches wide, 30.3 inches deep, and 28.3 inches high. The seat height is 39 cm, or about 15.4 inches.
