Bjørn Friborg sculpture

Large sculptural glass artwork Implosion designed and created by Danish glass artist Bjørn Friborg in 2019. This unique contemporary sculpture is hand-blown in solid glass and explores the dramatic interaction between transparency, colour and movement through a dynamic internal composition. Suspended within a clear, organically shaped vessel, ribbons of soft turquoise glass appear to implode and expand simultaneously, creating a sense of frozen motion that changes continuously as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.

The elongated oval form tapers elegantly towards a narrow foot, allowing the piece to stand with remarkable lightness despite its substantial scale. Within the transparent body, Friborg has encapsulated flowing layers of opaque aqua glass intertwined with delicate filigree-like trails and controlled air inclusions. The contrasting densities and textures produce an extraordinary optical depth, while the subtle green tint concentrated towards the base reinforces the illusion of energy gathering at the sculpture’s core. As natural or artificial light passes through the glass, the interior composition becomes increasingly animated, revealing new details from every perspective.

Entirely hand-crafted using advanced hot-glass techniques, the work demonstrates Friborg’s technical mastery of sculptural glass. The complex internal forms are created while the material remains molten, requiring precise timing and exceptional control during the blowing process. The polished exterior contrasts beautifully with the expressive interior, balancing technical refinement with spontaneous artistic gesture. The sculpture is signed and titled Implosion by the artist on the base.
