Deer sculpture

Information

This freestanding bronze sculpture represents an alert female deer, identifiable by its slender body and absence of antlers. The animal stands without an integral plinth, with all four hooves forming the points of support. No signature, foundry mark or date is visible.

The deer is modeled in a naturalistic but selectively simplified manner. Its long legs, narrow neck, rounded torso and pronounced hindquarters reproduce the principal anatomical proportions without extensive surface detailing. The head turns sharply back toward the body, while the large upright ears suggest attentiveness. The staggered position of the legs creates a sense of paused movement rather than a static frontal stance.

The composition is designed to be viewed from multiple directions. From the side, the elongated back and legs establish a predominantly horizontal profile. From the front and rear, the turned neck introduces a spiral movement through the figure. The absence of a base leaves open space between the legs and emphasizes the delicacy of the supporting structure.

The sculpture have been cast in bronze, an alloy principally composed of copper and tin. Its surface has been finished with a smooth dark brown to near-black patina, with warmer brown variations and lighter rubbed areas visible across the torso, neck and legs. The restrained modeling and polished surface place greater emphasis on silhouette and bodily volume than on fur texture.

The sculpture is in good vintage condition. It displays minor surface scratches, handling marks, small rubbed areas and variations in the patina consistent with age and use.

The sculpture measures 16.5 cm long × 6.5 cm wide × 15 cm high, corresponding to approximately 6.5 × 2.6 × 5.9 inches.
