Information

This is a very rare and early floor lamp designed by Bo Notini and produced by Glössner & Co in Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp exhibits a tall, slender profile with a refined presence typical of Scandinavian lighting design from the pre-war and wartime period, blending neoclassical echoes with modernist restraint.

The structure consists of a circular brass base that supports a vertical stem finished in cream lacquered metal. The brass elements are visibly aged, showing a warm patina consistent with careful use over the decades. The vertical pole is cleanly proportioned and contrasts subtly with the rich tone of the brass base and socket.

The standout feature of the lamp is its double-layered glass shade. The outer shade is crafted from frosted glass and intricately acid-etched with figurative motifs including a reclining nude female form, botanical elements such as leaves and vines, and a pattern of scattered crosses and floral forms. These designs are rendered in shallow relief and give a distinctly artistic and narrative character to the lamp. The inner opaline glass diffuser softens the illumination and allows the outer decoration to glow with depth and contrast when lit.

When illuminated, the layered glass creates a complex interplay of shadows and highlights, especially around the etched motifs. The etched lines cast subtle contours across surrounding surfaces, while the interior glow reveals the figure and foliage more clearly from within.

Bo Notini, active during the 1930s–1950s, is recognized for refined decorative arts that frequently combine functionality with expressive craftsmanship. He was particularly adept at working with etched and decorated glass, often incorporating poetic or romantic themes that lend emotional nuance to lighting and interiors.

Glössner & Co, a lesser-known but high-quality Swedish lighting producer of the mid-20th century, collaborated with several notable designers during this period. Their output is marked by technical finesse and careful material selection, evident in this lamp’s construction and detailing.

This floor lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and patina, particularly to the metal components, which reinforce its authenticity and age. The lamp retains its original hardware and materials, with minor wear consistent with over 70 years of age.

The dimensions are 31.5 cm in diameter and 175 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 12.4 inches in diameter and 68.9 inches in height.
