Børge Mogensen dining table
This is a rare dining table designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Børge Mogensen, produced by Svensk Fur in Sweden during the 1950s. The table exemplifies Mogensen’s philosophy of honest materials, utility, and modest aesthetics through a practical yet refined construction in pine, teak, and brass.
The table has a rectangular form with clean edges and round, tapered legs. The main body is constructed in solid pine with a light, warm tone, showing vertical grain structure and subtle variations in color. The tabletop surface and drop-leaf extensions are made of teak, offering a darker reddish-brown contrast with a fine and consistent grain pattern. The legs are detailed with solid teak foot caps, and concealed brass fittings support the drop-leaf mechanism on both ends. The table can be used in a compact configuration or extended via two foldable leaves for increased surface area, making it highly functional for both everyday and occasional use.
Børge Mogensen was a central figure in the development of modern Danish design, known for his commitment to democratic design ideals. He trained under Kaare Klint and served as a design director for FDB before establishing his own studio. Mogensen’s work is recognized for its utilitarian rigor, enduring craftsmanship, and subtle use of material contrasts. Though most associated with Danish manufacturers, Mogensen’s designs were also produced in Sweden during the 1950s, often by workshops such as Svensk Fur, which shared similar values of craft and functional clarity.
Svensk Fur, the Swedish manufacturer, was known for producing solid wood furniture rooted in Nordic timber traditions. Their partnership with designers like Mogensen exemplified a shared regional design ethos that emphasized simplicity, utility, and a closeness to natural materials.
This example remains in good vintage condition, with small signs of wear consistent with age and use. The wooden surfaces have been preserved with minimal refinishing to retain their character, and the brass mechanisms for the drop leaves function smoothly and hold securely.
