Børge Mogensen dining table
This is a rare extendable dining table or desk designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Søborg Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1953. The table exemplifies Mogensen’s utilitarian and architectural design philosophy, characterized by honest construction, robust materials, and a restrained modernist aesthetic rooted in Danish functionalism.
The tabletop and drop leaves are constructed from solid teak with a rich, warm tone and a pronounced linear grain. The surface has been restored and presents minimal signs of wear, showing consistent coloration and preserved texture. The extension mechanism is supported by a combination of wooden supports and exposed steel rods, contributing to both visual lightness and mechanical clarity. The underframe and tapered legs are crafted from oak with a slightly deeper hue than the top, contributing a subtle contrast between horizontal and vertical elements.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a leading figure in post-war Danish design. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an architect, Mogensen studied under Kaare Klint and carried forward the functionalist tradition with an emphasis on accessibility and quality. While often associated with Fredericia Furniture, he collaborated with several Danish manufacturers during his early career, including Søborg Møbelfabrik. His designs from the early 1950s often explored modularity and adaptability for domestic spaces, and this table reflects that ambition through its concealed drop-leaf function and durable hardware.
Søborg Møbelfabrik was a respected Danish furniture manufacturer known for working with influential designers and producing refined examples of Scandinavian craftsmanship during the mid-20th century. Their focus on quality joinery and modern silhouettes placed them at the center of the Danish modern movement.
The table is in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with age, and has undergone restorative treatment that respects the original finish and construction.
