Børge Mogensen dining table
This rare extendable dining table, model Öresund, was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1959 and produced by Karl Andersson & Söner in Sweden. Crafted from solid teak with brass hardware details, the table reflects Mogensen’s hallmark focus on honest materials, functional construction, and enduring craftsmanship. Its oval form is softened by gently rounded corners and a skirted apron that integrates seamlessly into the tapered, rounded legs, creating a subtle yet sturdy silhouette characteristic of Mogensen’s clarity and simplicity.
The teak displays a warm tone with fine, consistent grain and natural variations that add visual interest. Small exposed brass fittings attach the legs to the frame, providing a refined material contrast typical of high-quality Scandinavian cabinetry from this period.
This model is notable for its exceptional extendability, measuring 170 cm in length when closed and extending up to 410 cm when fully opened with all leaves inserted. This allows the table to accommodate large gatherings while maintaining a cohesive and elegant form. The extension mechanism is designed for stability and ease of use, aligning with Mogensen’s utilitarian design principles.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a seminal figure in Danish modern design, renowned for his democratic design approach and commitment to functionality and craftsmanship. Although most of his work was produced in Denmark, the Öresund series represents a unique collaboration with Swedish manufacturer Karl Andersson & Söner, founded in 1898 and known for its artisanal woodworking and precision joinery—making it a fitting partner for Mogensen’s straightforward aesthetic.
The table is in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use, including light surface wear on the top and subtle patina on the brass fittings. The teak retains its original hue and luster.
Dimensions are 170 cm wide (66.9 inches) closed, 410 cm wide (161.4 inches) fully extended, 130 cm deep (51.2 inches), and 72 cm high (28.3 inches).
