Børge Mogensen sofa
This rare sofa and daybed combination, model 4311/4312, was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies the clarity and restraint of Danish modernism while offering versatile functionality. Designed with both form and utility in mind, it is a testament to Mogensen’s dedication to democratic design principles and enduring craftsmanship.
The structure is built from solid oak with a warm, honey-toned finish that reveals the linear grain patterns of the timber. The frame is engineered with precise joinery, including visible dovetail construction at the leg bases and brass fittings that reinforce the geometric stability of the piece. The rear support consists of a horizontal oak slat assembly, giving the sofa an architectural transparency from the back and allowing it to function as a freestanding piece in an open room layout.
The seat and backrest cushions are newly upholstered in a soft, textured wool fabric in a natural beige tone. The upholstery is finished with deep-set tufted buttons in dark brown leather, providing tactile contrast and a subtle decorative detail. The dual-use design allows the backrest cushions to be removed and repositioned, converting the sofa into a daybed for lounging or guest use.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of the most influential figures in Danish furniture design. Trained under Kaare Klint and later appointed head of design at Fredericia Stolefabrik, he created pieces that were both functional and elegantly understated. Model 4311/4312 reflects his belief in honest materials, practical form, and minimal embellishment.
The condition is good vintage, with minor signs of age and use to the wooden frame, consistent with careful handling over time. The newly restored upholstery and supportive foam ensure the piece is fully usable and visually refined.
