Børge Mogensen sofa
This is a rare sofa and daybed combination, model 4311/4312, designed by Danish architect and designer Børge Mogensen during the 1950s. The piece exhibits Mogensen’s signature blend of functional clarity and refined craftsmanship, combining architectural precision with human-centered proportions. As with many of his designs, this sofa is a study in visual restraint, structure, and material honesty.
The frame is constructed from solid oak with a pronounced linear quality, exemplifying the robust but refined woodworking often found in mid-century Scandinavian design. Its open back with horizontal rails and visible brass hardware gives it a light and transparent character while maintaining structural solidity. The squared sled base is characteristic of Mogensen’s work and adds stability and visual rhythm to the composition.
The cushions have been recently reupholstered in a durable, woolen upholstery fabric in a tightly woven, beige-taupe mélange. The material exhibits a subtle variation in tone that enhances the natural texture and complements the warmth of the oak frame. The tufted details, highlighted with round brown leather-covered buttons, emphasize a tailored and deliberate aesthetic typical of Mogensen’s furniture. The geometric simplicity and modularity reflect the principles of democratic design that Mogensen advocated during his career.
This piece was produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik, a long-standing Danish manufacturer with which Mogensen had a close and productive collaboration from the late 1940s onward. Fredericia was responsible for producing many of his most iconic pieces, including those designed for public institutions, which required durable yet aesthetically restrained furnishings. Model 4311/4312 was likely intended for both residential and institutional contexts, offering a combination of seating and reclining functionality.
The condition of this piece is excellent, with the oak frame presenting minor signs of age-appropriate wear and an even patina. The upholstery is newly executed and unworn, offering immediate usability while preserving the design’s historical and aesthetic integrity.
