Bruno Mathsson book crib
This rare and early example of the T-704 book crib was designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1941. Crafted entirely from birch, a material favored by Mathsson for its flexibility and warm appearance, the piece features a rectangular, inward-sloped open container divided into three triangular compartments. It is supported by four elegantly curved, outward-splayed legs that lend the crib a light, dynamic presence despite its functional purpose.
The birch surface has developed a natural, even patina over time, with minor age-related marks and discoloration that reflect careful use. The compartments are intended to hold books or magazines upright, supported by the angled dividers. The construction showcases fine joinery and clean, precise execution characteristic of Mathsson’s early design approach.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a pivotal figure in Swedish modernism, celebrated for his ergonomic and structural innovations across furniture design and architecture. He often employed bentwood and laminate techniques, marrying functionalism with an organic sensibility. The T-704 book crib is among his lesser-known works, yet it embodies the same principles evident in his renowned lounge chairs and tables.
Produced by Firma Karl Mathsson, the workshop established by Bruno’s father and later operated in collaboration with Bruno, the piece retains its original production label on the underside, confirming provenance.
This book crib functions as both a practical storage object and a sculptural expression of early Swedish modern design. It measures 50.5 centimeters in width, 26 centimeters in depth, and 24 centimeters in height (approximately 19.9 x 10.2 x 9.4 inches).
