Bruno Mathsson book crib
This is a rare and early example of the T-704 book crib, designed by Bruno Mathsson in 1941 and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. It is executed in laminated and molded birch, displaying Mathsson’s signature approach to functionalist design through bentwood construction and organic forms. The book crib is characterized by its geometric body, composed of flat triangular planes forming a rectangular cradle with two internal dividers, resting on elegantly curved bentwood legs that lift the piece lightly from the floor.
The finish is a warm, honey-toned birch with a natural sheen that highlights the wood grain. The surface shows minor marks and light wear consistent with age and use, giving it an appealing patina typical of vintage Scandinavian furniture. The proportions are compact and practical, making it an archetypal modernist solution for storing books, magazines, or newspapers.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was one of Sweden’s most influential designers and architects, known for pioneering the use of laminated bentwood in furniture. His work combined functionality with a deep understanding of ergonomics, often resulting in pieces that are both sculptural and practical. Firma Karl Mathsson, the family company, was instrumental in producing Mathsson’s designs and became synonymous with Swedish modernism during the mid-20th century.
This piece reflects the early period of Mathsson’s experimentation with bentwood technology and his commitment to light, rational forms aligned with the ideals of Scandinavian modern design. Its geometric silhouette and innovative construction mark it as a collectible example of mid-century Scandinavian functionalism.
Dimensions are 50 cm wide, 27 cm deep, and 26 cm high (approximately 19.7 x 10.6 x 10.2 inches).
