Bruno Mathsson reading stand
This rare and functionally innovative reading stand with integrated lighting, designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden during the 1940s, is a unique example of Scandinavian Functionalism. The piece is a striking blend of user comfort, technical adjustment, and clean construction, with minimal ornamentation. It highlights Mathsson’s interest in ergonomics and practical design, focused on enhancing the user experience while maintaining aesthetic simplicity.
The structure consists of a slender steel tubular frame with a natural patinated brass finish, resting on a stable tripod base with three arched legs. The vertical standard supports an adjustable reading platform, with a fixed light source mounted above it. The reading surface is crafted from solid pine with a warm amber tone and framed at the sides to hold pages or documents in place. The platform’s angle can be adjusted via a brass clamp mounted on the rear crossbar, allowing for ergonomic positioning based on the user’s seated posture.
The integrated light is mounted on a curved arm extending laterally from the central vertical shaft. It features a flared, pleated fabric shade in its original condition, gently diffusing light downward. The brass lampholder and fittings show natural aging, adding authenticity and character to the object. This thoughtful design offers a controlled lighting environment for reading or studying, effectively combining practical utility with a poetic, sculptural form.
The condition of the stand is very good, with signs of natural wear and patina on the metal and wooden components consistent with age. The pine reading board has minor surface marks and traces of use, while the steel and brass elements remain structurally sound. The original fabric shade retains its pleating and shape, with expected minor discoloration from age.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a pioneering Swedish designer and architect, known for his groundbreaking work in ergonomics and modern furniture design. His approach combined traditional craftsmanship with a deep understanding of human-centered design, resulting in furniture that adapted to the body’s contours and enhanced the interaction between people and their environments. Mathsson often collaborated with his father, Karl Mathsson, whose workshop produced many of his early experimental designs.
The overall dimensions of the reading stand are 65 cm wide by 30 cm deep by 117 cm high (approximately 25.6 inches x 11.8 inches x 46.1 inches). This piece remains a rare and exceptional example of mid-century Swedish design, offering both functional lighting and a sculptural presence in any interior.
