Bruno Mathsson lounge chair
This rare early version of the “Pernilla” lounge chair was designed by Bruno Mathsson in 1936 and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. It is distinguished by two uncommon features: integrated wooden transport wheels and an adjustable reading stand, adding both practicality and unique character to the design.
The chair’s structure is crafted from bent birchwood, showcasing a fluid, biomorphic profile typical of Mathsson’s ergonomic investigations. The frame is made from laminated birch with steam-bent elements, forming continuous curves that support the head, spine, and legs in a reclined position. The seat and backrest are woven from the original green paper webbing in a fine checkered pattern, reinforced by edge lacing. This webbing provides a breathable, responsive surface that conforms comfortably to the body. The armrests follow the bentwood contours and are seamlessly integrated into the overall frame.
The reading stand is mounted on a black-lacquered metal armature and includes an adjustable wooden tray designed to hold books or papers. A period Karl Mathsson paper label on the reading tray confirms the piece’s authenticity and workshop origin.
Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a pioneer of Swedish functionalist design and a leading figure in ergonomic seating development. From the 1930s onward, he applied principles of body mechanics to create sculptural furniture prioritizing comfort, often replacing traditional upholstery with webbing and laminated wood. His collaboration with his father’s workshop, Firma Karl Mathsson, resulted in some of Scandinavia’s most iconic 20th-century furniture.
This example is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of age and use on the wooden wheels and frame, consistent with its history and originality. The original webbing and hardware are intact.
The lounge chair measures 64 cm in width, 170 cm in depth, and 92 cm in height, approximately 25.2 inches wide, 66.9 inches deep, and 36.2 inches high.
