Information

This sculptural brass bottle opener is attributed to Carl Auböck and was produced for Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s. Its organic, fluid shape is typical of Auböck’s mid-century design language, where everyday objects were transformed into small works of functional art. The form, reminiscent of an abstracted fish or tail fin, combines playful biomorphism with precise craftsmanship, making it as visually striking as it is practical.

The opener is crafted from solid brass, a material frequently used in the Auböck workshop for its durability, warm tone, and ability to develop a rich patina over time. The smooth, rounded handle ensures a comfortable grip, while the pointed upper element is designed to catch and lift bottle caps effortlessly. Signs of gentle use have given the surface a natural, aged character, highlighting the piece’s history and authenticity.

Carl Auböck was one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Viennese design. Educated at the Bauhaus under Johannes Itten, he later led his family’s renowned metal workshop in Vienna, producing a wide range of handcrafted objects that blurred the line between fine art and functional design. His work was widely exported and sold through influential design retailers such as Illums Bolighus, which played a key role in introducing modern European design to a Scandinavian audience.

The piece is in good vintage condition with small signs of wear.

Dimensions are 4.5 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and 6 cm high (1.8 x 3.9 x 2.4 in)
