Carl Auböck snuffer
This rare candle snuffer, attributed to Carl Auböck, was produced for Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s. It is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining sculptural elegance with functional precision. The piece is crafted from brass and bamboo, two materials often favored by Auböck for their contrasting tactile qualities and ability to age beautifully over time. The slender, organically curved brass head ends in a flared cone designed to safely extinguish candles without producing smoke, while the natural bamboo handle provides a comfortable and lightweight grip.
The snuffer’s design reflects Auböck’s signature approach, where everyday objects were elevated into artful, tactile forms. His work was deeply influenced by the Bauhaus principles of material honesty and functional simplicity, as well as by the Austrian modernist tradition. Pieces like this were often sold through leading design retailers such as Illums Bolighus, which played a key role in introducing high-quality European design to the Scandinavian market in the postwar years.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of use and a rich natural patina that enhances its character. Its sculptural silhouette and thoughtful material pairing make it not only a functional tool but also a collectible piece of 20th-century design history.
