Ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1940s. Executed in nickel-plated metal with a mouth-blown glass shade, the lamp reflects the refined quality and modernist sensibility characteristic of NK’s lighting production in the mid-20th century.
The glass shade is formed in a softly faceted, organic shape, composed of alternating satin and glossy vertical sections that create a rhythmic visual effect. When lit, the amber-toned glass emits a warm, diffused glow, accentuating the tonal variations of the surface. The upper section, including the suspension rod and canopy, is made of nickel-plated metal with a naturally aged patina, providing a subtle contrast to the glass form below.
The design combines geometric precision with organic softness, typical of Swedish functionalism from the period. The use of glass and metal, treated with restraint and balance, aligns with NK’s tradition of merging artisanal craftsmanship with industrial precision. While the designer remains unknown, the lamp’s form and material execution suggest a connection to the Scandinavian modern movement, where simplicity, harmony, and function were paramount.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with consistent signs of age, including a patina to the metal surfaces and minor wear to the glass, all in keeping with careful use over time.
