David Taylor stool
Unique “Bent Stool” by Studio Mellösaverken, Sweden, 2025. Designed by David Taylor and executed in bent aluminum, the stool explores the sculptural and structural possibilities of industrial metalworking through an exceptionally reduced and architectural form. The piece is signed and dated “DAVID TAYLOR MLV 2025”.
Constructed from folded and bent aluminum profiles, the stool is defined by its continuous flowing silhouette, where the transitions between horizontal and vertical planes appear almost softened and compressed, creating subtle sculptural tension within the otherwise minimal geometry. The carefully manipulated bends introduce a sense of movement and elasticity to the rigid material, emphasizing both the physical force of the shaping process and the reflective qualities of the brushed aluminum surface.
The satin-finished aluminum displays fine linear brushing that catches and diffuses light across the curved surfaces, producing shifting tonal variations from cool silver to warmer muted reflections depending on the viewing angle. The softened folds and compressed corners create an almost textile-like appearance, contrasting with the industrial precision of the material itself. Despite its compact dimensions, the stool possesses a strong visual presence, functioning equally as a utilitarian object and sculptural statement piece.
Studio Mellösaverken’s work reflects a contemporary Scandinavian approach to collectible design, balancing material experimentation, minimalism and craftsmanship. The deliberate simplicity of the form allows the details of the metal shaping and surface finishing to become central elements of the composition.
The stool remains in very good condition with only minor wear consistent with use and handling.
