Poul Kjærholm stools
Pair of PK-91 folding stools designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. Designed in 1961, the model exemplifies Kjærholm’s pursuit of structural clarity and his distinctive ability to combine industrial materials with refined craftsmanship. Originally conceived as a folding stool to accompany the PK-80 daybed, the PK-91 has since become one of the designer’s most celebrated and collectible seating designs.
The stools are constructed from satin-finished chromed spring steel with suspended canvas seats in a natural beige tone. The elegant X-shaped frames are formed from slender flat steel sections that intersect with precise mechanical pivots, creating a lightweight yet remarkably stable construction. The seat is made from a single piece of tightly stretched canvas, suspended between the steel frame to provide both flexibility and comfort while emphasizing the purity of the overall form. When folded, the stools become exceptionally compact, highlighting Kjærholm’s interest in functional engineering and efficient use of materials.
Poul Kjærholm regarded steel as a natural material equal to wood, leather and stone, and throughout his career he explored its structural and visual possibilities with exceptional precision. The PK-91 reflects this philosophy through its restrained geometry and meticulous detailing, where every component serves both a structural and aesthetic purpose. The design demonstrates the influence of classical folding furniture while translating the concept into a distinctly modern Scandinavian expression characterized by balance, proportion and material honesty.
The stools were produced by E. Kold Christensen, the exclusive manufacturer of Poul Kjærholm’s furniture from the late 1950s until 1980. The collaboration between Kjærholm and E. Kold Christensen resulted in some of the finest examples of Danish cabinetmaking and metal craftsmanship of the twentieth century, with production carried out to exceptionally high standards using carefully selected materials and precise manufacturing techniques. Early examples produced by E. Kold Christensen are particularly sought after by collectors due to their limited production and historical significance.
Both stools remain in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. The chromed steel frames retain their original finish with a light, even patina, while the canvas seats show minor wear that complements the character of the pieces without affecting their functionality.
