Information

PK33 stool designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1959 and produced by E. Kold Christensen, Denmark. This early example represents one of the most recognizable and technically refined seating designs from Kjærholm’s formative period and embodies the principles that would come to define Danish Modernism at its most architecturally rigorous. Combining industrial materials with exceptional craftsmanship, the model reflects Kjærholm’s lifelong exploration of proportion, structure, and material honesty.

The stool features a circular upholstered seat executed in original black leather supported by a three-legged chromed steel frame. The seat is generously padded and characterized by a distinctive central button tufting that creates a softly concave profile. Over time, the leather has developed a rich dark brown-black patina with visible creasing, surface markings, and tonal variation that emphasize the natural qualities of the material. The circular form appears almost suspended above the frame, creating a visual lightness despite the substantial construction.

The frame is executed in brushed and chromed spring steel with elegantly curved legs terminating in black plastic feet. Kjærholm’s use of steel was heavily influenced by his training as a cabinetmaker and his fascination with industrial manufacturing processes. Rather than treating steel as a purely structural material, he approached it with the same sensitivity traditionally reserved for fine woodworking, refining proportions and detailing to achieve a balance between strength and visual delicacy. The three-legged construction provides stability while reinforcing the stool’s sculptural and minimal appearance.

Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) is regarded as one of the most important figures in twentieth-century Scandinavian design. Educated at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he developed a unique design language distinguished by a restrained aesthetic, precise geometry, and sophisticated use of steel. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favored timber as the primary material, Kjærholm explored the expressive possibilities of metal while maintaining the craftsmanship traditions associated with Danish furniture design. His works are represented in major museum collections worldwide and remain among the most influential examples of Danish Modern furniture.

E. Kold Christensen played a crucial role in Kjærholm’s career, producing many of his most important early designs from the mid-1950s onward. The collaboration between designer and manufacturer is widely regarded as one of the most significant partnerships in post-war Danish furniture history. Furniture produced by E. Kold Christensen is particularly sought after by collectors due to its limited production, exceptional manufacturing quality, and direct association with Kjærholm’s original design intentions.

The stool presents in good vintage condition. The original leather upholstery displays expected age-related wear, surface scratches, creasing, and a well-developed patina consistent with decades of use. The chromed steel frame remains in good condition with minor wear and light oxidation marks visible in places. The overall condition is consistent with age and contributes positively to the character and authenticity of this early example.

Diameter 52.5 cm (20.67 in), Height 35 cm (13.78 in).
