Erik Buck bar stools
This set of four bar stools, model OD-61, was introduced in 1964 by Danish designer Erik Buck and produced by Oddense Maskinsnedkeri A/S in Denmark. Each stool is crafted from solid rosewood, its warm, reddish-brown hue enriched by a hand-applied oiled finish that highlights the wood’s natural grain patterns. The sculptural tripod base is formed of three gently tapering legs that sweep outward in a graceful curve, joined by subtly arched stretchers that double as ergonomic footrests. The precision of the joinery is evident in the seamless transitions between legs and supports, lending the frame both lightness of form and reassuring structural integrity.
The seats are molded into a shallow concave shape from natural leather, whose pale, honeyed tone contrasts softly with the rich rosewood. Each seat features a slight rear lip to cradle the sitter and prevent slippage, and over decades of use the leather has developed an even patina with gentle creasing that testifies to its quality and authenticity. The upholstery remains firm and fully intact, with no tears or stretching, preserving the original comfort intended by Buck’s design.
Erik Buck (1923–1982) was celebrated for his ability to fuse organic, human-centered forms with rigorous structural logic. Educated at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, he became one of the most influential figures in post-war Danish modernism, particularly known for seating that balanced sculptural grace with everyday usability. The OD-61 stool exemplifies his commitment to comfort and craftsmanship: the molded contours of the seat conform to the body, while the frame’s rhythmic curves and precise proportions reflect his architectural training.
Oddense Maskinsnedkeri A/S, active in the mid-20th century, was a leading Danish cabinetmaker that specialized in turning Buck’s visionary sketches into finely executed furniture. Their workshop combined traditional woodworking techniques with emerging industrial methods, ensuring each piece met exacting standards of finish and durability. The OD-61 model quickly found favor among residential and commercial interiors alike, prized for its compact footprint and refined silhouette.
In very good vintage condition, this quartet of stools shows only minor surface wear—small scuffs on the leg bases and faint marks on the leather seat edges—consistent with careful use over half a century. The rosewood frames retain their original sheen and structural rigidity, and the leather cushions continue to offer resilient support. Together, these stools stand as enduring examples of Danish modern design, where material honesty, ergonomic comfort, and sculptural elegance converge.
