Erik Buck

Erik Buck (1923–1982) was a Danish furniture designer associated with the Scandinavian modern movement of the mid-20th century. He is best known for his dining chairs produced during the 1950s and 1960s, many of which were manufactured by Danish cabinetmakers such as Oddense Maskinsnedkeri and Chr. Jensen Møbelfabrik. His work reflects the period’s focus on comfort, craftsmanship, and efficient production.

Biography

Erik Buck trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. This practical background in woodworking informed his approach to furniture design, where structural clarity and material quality played a central role. He began designing furniture in the early postwar years, at a time when Danish furniture gained international recognition for its balance of craftsmanship and modern form.

Buck’s designs are particularly associated with dining and bar seating, often characterized by gently curved backrests, tapered legs, and carefully upholstered seats. Many of his chairs were designed for series production, combining traditional joinery techniques with forms suited to modern interiors. His work demonstrates a clear understanding of ergonomics, with proportions intended to provide comfort during extended use.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Erik Buck collaborated with several Danish manufacturers, contributing to the export success of Danish furniture during the mid-century period. Today his designs remain widely collected and are regarded as representative examples of Danish modern furniture, valued for their functional design, durable construction, and understated aesthetic.
