Information

This is a rare mixed-media artwork by Swedish architect and designer Erik Chambert (1902–1988), titled Spansk Dans (Spanish Dance), executed in 1966. The composition is a geometric abstraction in layered and folded paper, encased within a custom plexiglass box. It measures 32 x 32 cm (12.6 x 12.6 in).

The work displays a dynamic interplay of sculptural paper forms, meticulously arranged into an architectural relief. Fan-folded and angular cut-outs in light-reflective silver tones rise from the white backing, creating subtle depth and shadow effects. The composition evokes movement and rhythm—aptly aligning with the title, which references dance. The crisp geometry and monochrome palette give it a Modernist and Constructivist character, while the use of folded material and three-dimensionality connects to the Scandinavian tradition of experimental design in the 1960s.

The piece is signed “Erik Chambert 1966” on the front and inscribed on the reverse with the title Spansk Dans. It is also marked with provenance details from “Galerie Bleue, 1983” a Stockholm gallery known for exhibiting Scandinavian modernist artists. The artwork originates from the artist’s family collection.

Condition is very good, with some minor signs of age visible on the rear panel and edges of the plexiglass enclosure. The overall composition remains sharp and intact.
