Information

This sculptural wall relief, titled Mot Höjderna (Towards the Heights), was created by Swedish architect and designer Erik Chambert in 1966. The work is composed of precisely folded and arranged paper elements mounted on a white background, housed within a clear plexiglass box measuring 32 x 32 x 7 cm (12.6 x 12.6 x 2.8 in).

The composition features angular and geometric paper forms that protrude from the flat surface, creating dynamic volumes and shadows. These elements are arranged in an upward sweeping movement, subtly emphasized by an underlying white circle and a set of intersecting black linear accents that frame and guide the viewer’s eye. The use of monochrome materials—white paper and black ink—enhances the formal and spatial interplay.

The work is signed Erik Chambert in the lower left and numbered 1/5 in the lower right, indicating that it is part of a limited series. The reverse is marked with the artist’s name, location (Norrköping, Schweden), and the date 1966. A label from Galerie Bleue, Stockholm, documents its exhibition in 1983, with provenance from the artist’s family.

Condition is good, with expected minimal age-related toning to the paper. The plexiglass box is intact with minor surface wear consistent with age. This work is representative of Chambert’s late-career exploration of constructivist abstraction and spatial structure in low-relief formats.

Provenance

The artist's family. Galerie Bleue, Stockholm, 1983.
