Information

This is a relief artwork by Swedish architect and artist Erik Chambert (1902–1988), titled Gibraltar, executed in 1980. The composition consists of a sharply contoured geometric acrylic form painted in a matte ultramarine blue, mounted within a larger white square field. The central form evokes both angular abstraction and partial enclosure, with the paper folded into dimensional planes that produce dynamic shadow effects under changing light.

The relief is constructed from painted paper mounted on a white background, encased in a deep custom-made plexiglass box. The plexiglass construction is carefully assembled with visible fasteners along the perimeter. The overall dimensions are 55 x 55 cm, with the depth provided by the layered mounting system contributing to the sculptural presence of the piece.

Signed Erik Chambert on the lower right edge. Titled and dated Gibraltar 1980 on the reverse in ink, along with exhibition and inventory labels including from Moderna Museet, Stockholm, where the piece was exhibited in the retrospective Nu: Erik Chambert from October 31, 2009 to January 10, 2010. Additional provenance includes Åmells Konsthandel, Stockholm.

Condition is good, with minor traces of handling and age-appropriate surface marks to the plexiglass. The artwork is representative of Chambert’s late-career exploration of paper as a sculptural medium, reflecting his interest in concrete abstraction and architectural spatial dynamics.
