FDB Møbler stools

Information

This pair of early modernist stools was produced by FDB Møbler in Denmark during the 1940s. Though the designer is unknown, the design adheres to the functionalist principles gaining prominence in Europe at the time, featuring clean geometric lines and industrial materials. Each stool has a cantilevered tubular steel frame with a chrome finish, supporting a rectangular seat upholstered in original black leather. The seat curves gently at the front edge and is fixed directly to the frame, creating a lightweight and visually minimal silhouette.

The chromed steel tubing forms a continuous C-shaped loop, transitioning smoothly from the base to the seat support without joints. This construction method reflects the Bauhaus design language, associated with designers such as Marcel Breuer. The combination of metal framing and thin leather upholstery emphasizes material efficiency and functional utility—core aspects of interwar modernist design. FDB Møbler, founded in 1942, was instrumental in developing democratic design in Scandinavia, and these stools embody the experimental, internationalist spirit of Danish furniture from the pre-war era.

The leather on both stools shows signs of use and age, including surface cracking and minor edge wear. The chrome finish remains largely intact but exhibits some oxidation and light pitting, typical for original surfaces from this period.

Each stool measures 35 centimeters wide, 34.5 centimeters deep, and 44 centimeters high (approximately 13.8 by 13.6 by 17.3 inches).
