Information

This very rare Scandinavian floor lamp was produced in Sweden during the 1940s and combines mahogany, woven cane, and brass to embody an early modernist aesthetic. The design reflects a transitional period in Scandinavian lighting, balancing handcrafted materiality with refined functionalism, and merging organic warmth with a slender architectural form.

The lamp stands on a circular mahogany base with a softly beveled edge, showcasing the wood’s visible grain. The vertical shaft is tightly wrapped in woven cane, adding tactile texture and a warm natural tone to the otherwise minimal silhouette. At the top, a gently curved brass arm extends horizontally before turning downward to suspend the light source. The brass has developed a subtle, matte patina with age, softening its metallic sheen.

The original lampshade is not included, but the fitting accommodates a standard-sized shade. The lamp’s form is ideal for placement beside seating or reading areas, where its offset light can provide directional, ambient illumination.

This piece exemplifies Swedish lighting from the period bridging interwar classicism and mid-century modernism, before Scandinavian design gained global prominence. The use of natural materials and its modest scale suggest it may have been a bespoke or limited production object from a small atelier or independent craftsman.

The lamp is in very good condition with visible signs of age, including wear on the base and a matured tone on the brass and cane. It remains structurally sound and stable.

Dimensions are 34 cm wide, 80 cm deep (including the arm reach), and 166 cm high—approximately 13.4 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, and 65.4 inches high.
