Frode Holm dressing table
This dressing table, designed by Danish designer Frode Holm, was produced by Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1940s. It is a distinctive piece reflecting the early evolution of Scandinavian modernism, incorporating refined materials and elegant geometries with a delicate structural sensibility.
The cabinet is constructed in richly toned mahogany, exhibiting a deep reddish-brown color with a fine linear grain. The surface of the tabletop is inset with glass, providing a protective and reflective surface while subtly contrasting with the warmth of the wood. The overall form is rectangular with softly rounded corners and precisely detailed edges, emphasizing craftsmanship and material quality.
Mounted above the tabletop is a circular mirror set in a slim metal frame, supported by a vertical steel rod which anchors discreetly to the rear of the case. The mirror, which remains fixed rather than adjustable, adds a sculptural and architectural character to the ensemble. Below the surface are two symmetrical drawers, fitted with small, simple metal pulls, providing practical storage within the compact footprint of the piece.
The entire structure is elevated on slender steel legs, joined by crisscrossed stretchers that offer both lateral stability and an aesthetic counterpoint to the rectilinear case. The legs terminate in arched, tapered feet, which subtly evoke the Art Deco influence present in early Scandinavian modern furnishings. The restrained ornamentation, linearity, and combination of metal and wood anticipate the stylistic transitions of postwar Danish design.
This piece remains in good vintage condition with small signs of wear consistent with age, including minor patina to the steel and surface marks on the wood and glass. The design is well preserved, retaining its original proportions and finishes.
Dimensions are 100 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 128 cm high to the top of the mirror, with the tabletop itself at a height of 70.5 cm (39.4 x 18.9 x 50.4 inches; table height 27.8 inches). This is a rare example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian design that bridges prewar elegance and functionalist minimalism.
