Information

This wardrobe was designed by Frode Holm and produced by Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s. It features a combination of teak and rosewood, complemented by brass hardware, a material palette typical of high-end Danish cabinetmaking in the mid-century period. The exterior showcases vertically oriented rosewood panels at the base, contrasting with larger teak veneer doors above. The grain of the wood is bookmatched and vertically aligned, creating a symmetrical pattern that emphasizes visual rhythm. The wardrobe’s overall form is rectilinear with sharp corners and rests on a recessed plinth base, embodying the clean lines and minimal ornamentation associated with Scandinavian modernism.

Inside, the wardrobe is divided into two compartments. The left section contains three flush-mounted solid wood drawers with cut-out pulls beneath a full-height hanging space. The right compartment also offers hanging space and includes a tilting mirror mounted on the interior side of the door. The mirror is supported by a carved wooden peg and accompanied by a chrome towel bar. The interior surfaces are finished in a light cream color, providing a bright contrast to the darker wood exterior.

Frode Holm was a relatively lesser-known Danish designer active during the mid-20th century, and pieces attributed to him are scarce in the market. Illums Bolighus, the producer, was a prominent Danish design house and retailer known for collaborating with many leading Scandinavian designers. Their 1950s production was distinguished by meticulous craftsmanship, quality control, and a sophisticated design language.

This wardrobe exemplifies mid-century Danish furniture through its combination of functionality and elegant craftsmanship. Its refined proportions and premium materials position it among the more prestigious examples of Scandinavian domestic furniture from the era. The piece measures 113 centimeters in width, 45 centimeters in depth, and 161 centimeters in height (approximately 44.5 by 17.7 by 63.4 inches). It remains in very good vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with its age and retains its original fittings and finish.
