Gerald Thurston floor lamp
This rare and early floor lamp, model G-3, was designed by Gerald Thurston and produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp features a black lacquered metal frame composed of three slender rods extending upward from a circular base. Brass details accent the tips of the rods and the base, providing a subtle contrast to the dark metal and enhancing the lamp’s refined appearance. The original cylindrical shade is made of textured fabric in a muted red tone, complemented by a pleated cream diffuser at the bottom, which softens the emitted light.
Gerald Thurston was a notable American lighting designer celebrated for his innovative mid-century modern creations that balance functionality with sculptural form. Bergboms, a Swedish manufacturer, was known for its high-quality craftsmanship and contribution to the production of Scandinavian modern lighting during the mid-20th century. The G-3 model exemplifies a blend of American modernist aesthetics with Scandinavian simplicity, making it a significant design from this period.
The lamp is preserved in its original condition, showing signs of age-appropriate wear, including patina on the metal components. The fabric shade remains intact, with slight variations in texture that reflect its vintage status.
The lamp measures approximately 43 cm in diameter (16.9 inches) and 153 cm in height (60.2 inches).
