Information

This rare and unusually large vase was designed by Gertrud Lönegren and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1940s. Distinguished by its bold spherical form and richly textured surface, the vase exemplifies the artistic direction that made Lönegren one of the most important ceramic designers at Rörstrand during the mid-century period. Combining sculptural volume with a highly architectural decorative treatment, the piece demonstrates her ability to balance traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly modern expression.

The vase is executed in stoneware and decorated with an intricate relief pattern composed of carefully arranged vertical ribs that encircle the body in horizontal bands. The alternating raised cream-colored lines and deep brown glaze create a striking visual rhythm, accentuating the rounded form while emphasizing the precision of the hand-crafted decoration. The glaze displays a warm palette of chestnut, umber, and dark bronze tones, enriched by subtle variations and pooling that highlight the relief work. Viewed from above, the radiating pattern converges elegantly around the narrow opening, creating a captivating geometric effect.

Gertrud Lönegren (1905–1985) was among the leading figures in Swedish ceramic design during the twentieth century. After joining Rörstrand in the 1930s, she developed a highly individual style characterized by sculptural forms, tactile surfaces, and innovative decorative techniques. Her work often drew inspiration from natural structures and architectural motifs, resulting in ceramics that possess both decorative richness and strong modernist clarity. Today, her most distinctive studio-produced works are highly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian ceramics.

The present example is notable not only for its rare model but also for its impressive scale. The substantial spherical body gives the vase a strong sculptural presence, allowing it to function equally well as a decorative object or as a vessel for floral arrangements. The combination of the textured relief decoration and the deep earthy glaze creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the surface, revealing new details from every angle.

The underside retains the impressed Rörstrand mark together with model number notation, confirming its production by the renowned Swedish manufacturer. The vase remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful handling over time. The glaze retains excellent depth and character, and the relief decoration remains crisp and well preserved.
