Gertrud Lönegren (1905–1970) was a Swedish ceramic designer known for her work at S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker in Uppsala and Rörstrand during the 1930s and early 1940s. Her production included both art pottery and tableware, with designs that often combined strong forms, decorative restraint, and a clear understanding of ceramic material. She is particularly associated with expressive stoneware and faience objects, as well as series such as Florens and the tea service Blanche.

Biography

Gertrud Margareta Lönegren-Jerkman was born in 1905 in Hakarp, Sweden. She studied at the Technical School in Stockholm and at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, where she received training that gave her a strong foundation in ceramic design, form, and decorative composition.

After completing her studies, Lönegren began working at S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker in Uppsala, where she was active between 1932 and 1936. During this period, she designed a large number of ceramic objects. When S:t Erik later closed, several of its models and patterns were acquired by the nearby Upsala-Ekeby factory, allowing some of Lönegren’s designs to continue in production there.

In 1936, Lönegren joined Rörstrand, where she worked until 1941. At Rörstrand, her production included both tableware and art pottery. She designed services, including fruit and tea services, while also creating decorative ceramics with bold shapes and a strong material presence. Among her best-known works is the series Florens, consisting of vases and bowls with powerful forms and a robust ceramic expression.

Lönegren’s work is also associated with the tea service Blanche, and she is represented in collections including Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Upplandsmuseet in Uppsala. Although her career as an industrial ceramic designer was relatively concentrated, her work forms part of an important period in Swedish ceramic history, when factories such as S:t Erik, Upsala-Ekeby, and Rörstrand helped shape modern Swedish ceramic design.
