Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlestick
This candlestick, model L-102/27, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. Hans-Agne Jakobsson, originally trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an architect, became one of Sweden’s most recognized lighting designers. While he is best known for his atmospheric lighting designs, often made of brass and glass or pinewood, he also created a number of smaller decorative objects, including candleholders, with the same level of material sensitivity and sculptural refinement.
The candlestick is constructed from a combination of solid brass and hand-blown glass. The cylindrical brass base is substantial and simply formed, with a wide flat foot for stability. The brass surface exhibits a natural patina, resulting in a mottled, warm finish that reflects its mid-century origin and prolonged use. This patina contributes to the authenticity and historical value of the piece.
The upper section supports a domed, slightly amber-tinted glass shade that is gently flared and fully transparent. The blown glass is thin-walled and has subtle optical distortions characteristic of traditional handmade techniques. The shade rests over the candleholder, diffusing the flame’s glow while protecting it from drafts, and contributing to the soft ambient light typical of Jakobsson’s aesthetic.
The piece is in good vintage condition, with evident patina on the brass and minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. It remains structurally intact and fully functional.
The dimensions are 16.5 cm in diameter and 27 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 6.5 inches in diameter and 10.6 inches in height.
