Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. Jakobsson, one of the most prolific Scandinavian lighting designers of the mid-20th century, was renowned for his ability to combine materials such as brass, glass, and wood in ways that created both sculptural presence and atmospheric light diffusion. His designs often balanced functionality with a strong decorative character, making them highly sought after in both domestic and public interiors.
The lamp is constructed in brass with a polished surface that has developed a soft patina, complemented by blown glass shades in a warm, slightly smoked tone. The shades are cylindrical with a rounded lower portion, enclosing the bulbs in a way that softens and diffuses the emitted light. When illuminated, the glass produces a warm glow, emphasizing Jakobsson’s consistent interest in creating lighting that feels intimate and atmospheric. The chandelier has a radial construction, with brass arms supporting the individual light holders, all connected to a central vertical rod and canopy. This structural clarity reflects the Scandinavian mid-century approach to design, where form follows function but is executed with elegance and restraint.
The condition is excellent vintage, showing minor signs of use and age-appropriate wear consistent with careful preservation. The brass has acquired a natural patina, while the glass shades remain intact and in very good condition. Its aesthetic embodies mid-century Scandinavian modernism, combining simple geometry with refined craftsmanship.
