Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model S1987, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamp is composed of six elongated, conical opaline glass shades mounted on cylindrical brass holders, which are arranged around a central brass stem. Each holder is accented with a perforated ring, allowing light to escape softly and contributing to the decorative effect. The combination of polished brass and frosted glass exemplifies Jakobsson’s refined approach to material contrasts and light diffusion.

The lamp measures 25 cm in diameter and 51 cm in height (approximately 9.8 x 20.1 inches). Its vertical proportions and clustered arrangement of shades create a sculptural composition, while the opaline glass provides a warm, even illumination. When lit, the shades produce a glowing vertical rhythm, emphasizing Jakobsson’s signature design principle of creating atmosphere through soft, indirect light.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers of the 20th century. Trained as an architect, he established his company in Markaryd in 1951 and produced a wide range of innovative lighting designs for domestic, public, and ecclesiastical settings. Known for his mastery of glare-free illumination and his experimentation with shades in metal, glass, and wood, Jakobsson became internationally recognized for designs that balanced functionality with a sculptural and atmospheric presence. His company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, operated until the late 20th century and left behind a legacy of some of the most iconic Scandinavian lighting designs.

This example remains in excellent condition, with only small signs of usage consistent with age. The brass retains a warm patina, and the opaline glass shades are well preserved without cracks or chips. It is a fine example of Jakobsson’s mid-century production, demonstrating his ability to merge architectural rigor with poetic light design.
