Information

This ceiling lamp, model T-549 also known as “Carolin” was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and material sensibility characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.

The lamp features a dome-shaped shade constructed from a green textile stretched over a wire frame, creating a softly diffused light with subtle vertical paneling. The textile has a fine woven structure, allowing a warm and even glow when illuminated. The interior retains its original light-colored lining, enhancing light distribution and contrast against the vivid outer surface. The structure is supported by a central brass stem and ceiling cup, complemented by a brass pull rod ending with a spherical finial—an elegant functional detail typical of Jakobsson’s work.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish designer and lighting manufacturer known for his sensitivity to light diffusion and atmosphere. After studying architecture and working with Carl Malmsten and Gunnar Asplund, Jakobsson founded his own company in Markaryd in 1951. His designs often explored the interplay between material, form, and the quality of light, resulting in fixtures that combined technical precision with a poetic visual effect. The “Carolin” model represents his mature period, where brass and colored textiles were used to achieve both decorative and functional harmony.

Produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, the lamp reflects the post-war Scandinavian modernist ethos of honest materials and refined proportions. The use of brass and textile situates it within the Swedish modern aesthetic of the 1950s, emphasizing craftsmanship and atmosphere over ornamentation.

The lamp is in excellent condition with only small signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. The brass retains a warm patina, and the textile shade remains in fine structural and visual condition.

Diameter 55 cm (21.7 inches), total height approximately 110 cm (43.3 inches).
