Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamps
A rare pair of ceiling lamps designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Ellysett AB in Markaryd, Sweden, in 1965. The lamps are executed in pine and represent a refined example of Scandinavian modern lighting design from the mid-1960s, where natural materials and carefully engineered light diffusion were central elements of the design language.
Each shade is constructed from concentric curved pine slats arranged in a stepped circular formation, creating a sculptural geometric silhouette with strong architectural character. The layered construction conceals the light source while allowing illumination to filter softly through the open structure, producing a warm and atmospheric glow. When lit, the lamps project subtle shadows and rhythmic patterns across surrounding surfaces, emphasizing the depth and precision of the layered construction.
The natural pine has developed a rich warm tone over time, highlighting the grain and texture of the wood. The balanced proportions and organic materiality give the lamps a calm and sophisticated presence while remaining visually striking. Viewed from below, the internal concentric structure reveals the technical complexity of the design and the careful craftsmanship behind its construction.
Produced by Ellysett AB, a manufacturer closely associated with innovative Scandinavian lighting during the period, the lamps reflect Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s enduring interest in atmospheric lighting and soft indirect illumination. Examples of this scale and form are uncommon, particularly as a matched pair.
