Hans-Agne Jakobsson floor lamp
The floor lamp model G-109 was designed by Swedish lighting designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd during the 1950s. This model exemplifies Jakobsson’s distinct approach to atmospheric lighting, prioritizing soft diffusion and material interplay over stark functionality. The lamp represents a unique blend of theatrical design and subtle craftsmanship, characteristic of Jakobsson’s work throughout the mid-century period.
The construction is primarily of brass, with a warm, reflective finish that adds a sense of richness and material depth. The stem and base are slender and vertically aligned, supporting a decorative green silk fringe shade that defines the lamp’s visual identity. This fringe encases the light source, allowing illumination to filter softly through the threads while casting layered shadows that subtly animate surrounding surfaces. The result is an intimate and visually dynamic lighting effect, enhancing both the tactile and spatial qualities of an interior.
The lamp is equipped with a standard E27 socket, suitable for a range of light bulb types, although its optimal effect is achieved using warm, low-intensity lighting to preserve the intended ambiance. The proportion and scale of the lamp make it particularly suited as a decorative lighting element in lounges or quiet corners, rather than as a primary light source.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was known for his innovative exploration of how light interacts with material. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later working under Carl Malmsten and Werner West, Jakobsson developed a distinctive style centered on layered shades, sculptural forms, and filtered light. His designs for his own firm in Markaryd were widely recognized for their ability to create mood and soften the harshness of electric light, often employing materials such as silk, brass, and wood veneer.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing small signs of age-related wear. The brass surface displays minor patination, and the green silk fringes are intact, with only minimal evidence of handling. These details contribute to the authenticity and preserved character of the piece.
The lamp measures 20 cm in width, 24 cm in depth, and 125 cm in height. In imperial units, this translates to approximately 7.9 inches wide, 9.4 inches deep, and 49.2 inches high.
