Hans-Agne Jakobsson side table
Rare and early side table designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. This uncommon model reflects Jakobsson’s experimental approach to furniture design, where lightweight construction, sculptural metalwork, and graphic decorative surfaces were combined into elegant and highly distinctive compositions.
The table features a rectangular top framed in solid teak, enclosing a laminated paper surface decorated with an abstract motif reminiscent of microscopic organisms, seed heads, or celestial formations. Rendered in monochrome tones against a dark background, the pattern creates a striking visual effect and demonstrates the playful and artistic sensibility characteristic of Scandinavian modernism during the post-war period. The warm reddish-brown teak frame provides a refined contrast to the graphic surface while highlighting the craftsmanship of the piece.
Supporting the top is a remarkably light yet structurally expressive iron base. Slender black-lacquered steel rods form an architectural arrangement of angled legs and intersecting braces, creating a sense of movement and transparency. The lower sections terminate in distinctive threaded metal feet, a detail that reinforces the industrial character of the design while contributing to its visual identity.
The combination of organic imagery, warm natural materials, and precise metal construction is emblematic of Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s work during the 1950s, a period in which he explored furniture and interior objects alongside the lighting designs for which he later became internationally renowned. Surviving examples of these early tables are rarely encountered, particularly with original labels intact.
The table remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The top shows light wear consistent with careful use over time, while the iron frame retains its original character and finish. The original Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB Markaryd label is preserved on the underside.
A matching table is also available, offering the possibility of creating a highly unusual and collectible pair.
