Hans-Agne Jakobsson wall lamp
This rare wall lamp, model V-180, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed in brass and glass and presents a sculptural composition where reflective and translucent surfaces are used to control light output and visual impact. The design is both technically resolved and visually expressive, characteristic of Jakobsson’s experimental approach to lighting during the post-war period.
The lamp consists of a polished circular brass backplate with a softly convex profile, mounted slightly off the wall to enhance its reflective qualities. In front of the brass disc sits a spherical glass shade in a deep green tone, partially enclosing the light source. The glass sphere is supported by a cylindrical brass holder connected to the backplate by a short curved arm. This layered construction allows the brass surface to reflect and amplify the light emitted through the green glass, creating a complex interplay of color, reflection, and shadow.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers, widely known for his innovative use of materials such as brass, copper, and colored glass. His designs often explore indirect lighting principles, where glare is minimized and light is instead diffused and reflected to create atmosphere. The V-180 wall lamp is a clear example of this philosophy, using form and material to shape the character of the illumination rather than relying on exposed light sources.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, based in Markaryd, was a leading producer of decorative lighting in Scandinavia during the mid-20th century. The company gained international recognition for its high-quality production and its close collaboration with Jakobsson, resulting in a large body of distinctive lighting designs that remain highly regarded today.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of usage consistent with age. The brass shows light patina and surface marks, while the glass globe is well preserved with minor wear. These traces contribute to the authenticity of the piece without detracting from its overall visual integrity.
