Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 3, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is distinguished by a cage-shaped frame made from lacquered metal, which is decorated with stylized brass birds in flight. Inside the frame, a cylindrical fabric screen softly diffuses the light, creating a warm and inviting illumination.

The design presents a sculptural and airy form, with the open metal cage allowing light to be dispersed both directly and indirectly. The brass birds are positioned at various points on the outer frame, adding a dynamic and decorative quality that enhances the overall sense of movement and lightness. This combination of metal, brass, and fabric is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, which valued craftsmanship, organic motifs, and balanced aesthetics.

Hans Bergström was a prominent Swedish lighting designer and co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His work often merged functionalism with artistic expression, employing natural themes and sculptural forms to produce innovative lighting solutions. Ateljé Lyktan earned a reputation for high-quality materials and refined craftsmanship, becoming one of Sweden’s foremost lighting manufacturers.

The lamp is preserved in well-maintained vintage condition. The brass elements exhibit an aged patina consistent with age, while the fabric screen retains its original shape and texture, contributing significantly to the lamp’s atmospheric lighting effect.

The lamp measures 35 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height (13.8 by 15.7 inches), with an overall drop height of 74 cm (29.1 inches), making it a distinctive and elegant example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.
