Information

This rare wall-mounted lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Sweden during the 1950s, is a striking synthesis of natural form and mid-century modern functionality. Crafted in patinated brass, the main body of the lamp takes on the sinuous silhouette of a climbing vine or branch, its gently undulating stem supporting a series of hand-formed leaves whose subtle surface variations and deep golden tones speak to the material’s gradual oxidation over time. The organic irregularity of each leaf imparts a sculptural rhythm, while the controlled asymmetry of the composition lends the piece an elegant sense of upward motion.

From this central “vine” two slender arms extend outward in sweeping curves, each terminating in a down-turned cylindrical shade dressed in natural linen textile. When illuminated, these shades cast a warm, diffused glow, the linen softening the light and emphasizing the brasswork’s rich patina. The positioning of the arms ensures balanced illumination over a broad area, making the lamp as practical for task lighting as it is decorative in its presence.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), trained as an architect and founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was instrumental in establishing the visual language of Swedish lighting in the mid-20th century. His designs consistently married architectural clarity with a strong decorative sensibility, often invoking natural motifs rendered in high-quality materials. Under his creative direction, Ateljé Lyktan became renowned for handcrafted fixtures that combined technical innovation with artisanal refinement.

Measuring 80 cm in width, 24 cm in depth, and 90 cm in height (approximately 31.5 × 9.4 × 35.4 inches), this wall sconce remains in very good original condition. The brass retains its rich patina, marked by subtle surface variations and signs of age that enhance its authenticity, while the linen shades show only light wear consistent with careful use. As both functional lighting and sculptural art, this piece exemplifies Bergström’s capacity to translate natural inspiration into timeless Scandinavian design.
