Hans Bölling trolley
This trolley with two loose trays was designed by Hans Bølling and produced by Torben Ørskov & Co. in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece is constructed in oak with reversible trays made of formica — one side black, the other white — allowing for variation in color and presentation. Its form expresses the refined functionality characteristic of Danish modern design, where mobility, adaptability, and proportion were key design principles.
The structure consists of a circular oak frame supported by four cylindrical legs on original brass and rubber casters, providing both stability and ease of movement. Each removable tray rests securely within the frame and can be lifted out for serving or reconfiguration. The contrasting black and white formica surfaces emphasize Bølling’s attention to visual balance and utility, transforming a simple serving trolley into an elegant, sculptural object.
Hans Bølling (b. 1931) is celebrated for his ability to merge playfulness with precision, working across architecture, furniture, and object design. His collaboration with Torben Ørskov, a key producer and distributor of mid-century Danish design, helped bring his functional yet poetic creations to a wider audience. The Bølling trolley in particular has become one of the most recognized icons of Scandinavian modernism, valued for its versatility and timeless appeal.
This example remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and patina to the oak and formica surfaces. The natural wear enhances its authenticity and warmth, consistent with age and careful use.
