Information

This exceptionally rare Architect’s Desk, model JH-571, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by the esteemed Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. It represents a high point in Danish modern design, integrating multiple materials with refined architectural precision. The desk combines a teak veneer top with solid oak legs and steel tension supports. The teak, with its deep amber hue and fine grain, forms a broad, rectangular working surface. This is visually counterbalanced by the lighter tone of the oak legs, which are splayed and angled outward to provide both structural stability and sculptural form. The intersecting steel rods add a subtle industrial element, increasing structural rigidity while contributing to the minimalist modernist language of the piece.

Two drawers are suspended beneath the tabletop, each with integrated circular pulls accented by steel, underscoring Wegner’s focus on tactile functionality and visual clarity. These drawers are shallow and well-proportioned, designed to hold essential tools or documents without interrupting the desk’s linear silhouette.

The desk is in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of age-appropriate wear. The teak surface retains its original luster and patina, and all structural components remain solid and intact. The steel bracing is clean, with no corrosion, maintaining both its functional and visual role.

Hans J. Wegner, one of the leading figures of Danish Modernism, was noted for his rigorous approach to joinery and form. His collaboration with Johannes Hansen, a master cabinetmaker known for producing some of the finest examples of mid-century Danish furniture, resulted in numerous benchmark designs. The JH-571 desk was conceived during a period of intense experimentation in form and material, targeting the needs of professionals such as architects, where utility was enhanced by elegance.

This piece reflects the essence of Scandinavian modernism: a harmony of organic materials, balanced proportions, and thoughtful construction.
